As cliche as it may sound, it’s super important to identify your why for the sake of building a solid foundation for your business. Your why and mission statements often get mistaken for each other. Your mission statement describes what you do and the transformations your products or services can deliver. Your why involves much more than that; it gives you reasons for the mission you want to accomplish. By identifying what your why is, you will gain more clarity and direction to build a business you truly believe in.
So, ask yourself “why do you want to become a copywriter?” “Why does it matter to you?” “What gets you out of bed?”
One of the biggest mistakes I see new copywriters make is that they offer too many services. Offering too many services can create confusion within your business. When you’re first starting out, I recommend creating 3 packages that you absolutely feel confident in. Your offerings should be aligned with your core values, vision, and mission. You should also have a seamless process in place for each service so that you know exactly what you need to do in order to deliver tangible results for your clients.
If there’s one thing I want you to take away from this blog post, it’s this: stop charging hourly rates. When you work with your clients on an hourly basis, not only you’re basically trading time for money, but this pricing structure also makes it difficult for you to have predictable income.
Think about this: the more you do something, the more efficient and experience you get, right? And the faster you become, the fewer hours you can charge for your services. However, the value you provide is actually MORE because of your experience.
When I finally decided to make the switch from hourly to monthly retainer packages, my business took off!
