Delight in the Lord

Delight in the Lord

Delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalms 37:3

Psalm 37: 4 "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart."

Such a powerful promise, isn't it?

You know there are quite a few bible verses that you hear all the time, and you say it to people occasionally as an encouragement without knowing what it really means? Psalm 37:4 is definitely one of those for me.
I find the idea of delight in the Lord vague. What does it really mean? And what exactly do I do when I delight? To be honest with you, I mostly find it corny.

Until recently, God has revealed to me that to delight in Him is to be with Him. To enjoy being with Him. And I started to think about my relationship with my earthly father. I always get excited when we are together. It doesn't matter what we do, I just like to be with him. Those times are special, vulnerable and effortless. My dad would do anything to keep me safe and be with me. He reminds me I am a daughter. A precious daughter of his.

As I was reflecting on this,  there's a light bulb moment when I realized "Wait! Doesn't our Heavenly Father want the same for us if not more?" Our hearts are always full of desires. Whether it is a desire for relationship, attention, comfort, love, security, and many more, God wants to fill those in. Don't get me wrong, I do not think God will give us everything we want. But what God offers to us is far greater than what we could ever imagine or ask for. He wants to fill our hearts with eternal promises rather than a job, a car, a house or even a marriage.

Psalm 37:4 holds a beautiful promise to reveal the heart of God and our human hearts. It is not only an eternal promise, but also an invitation for us to put our trust in God that our desires can be filled by Him. He is our loving Father, our Saviour, our Protector and our ultimate Provider. He knows His children and He can and will make our hearts satisfied.

My friends, can I encourage you today to be with God, even if you don't feel like it? Would you delight in Him?
