What you need to do before working with a copywriter (and how to know if you need one)

October 6, 2020 6:00 am

Yay, you’re ready to hire help! How amazing does that feel?

I really think that copywriting is one of those things that most business owners never really signed up for but still need to be good at it. Why? Because you need words to sell. While outsourcing your copywriting to a professional copywriter can save you time and ensure the copy will perform for max. ROI, the process of finding the right copywriter and working with one can feel overwhelming.

In today’s blog, we’ll dive deeper into what you need to do before bringing someone on because if you are not clear, it won’t be suitable for either party.

What you need to do before working with a copywriter

1. You need to have defined core offerings, aka your product suite built out

It is not your copywriter’s job (at least not what I claim to do for my clients 😉 ) to help you build your offerings (i.e. deliverables, pricing, packages, etc.). Your copywriter is there to help you convert your readers/audience into paying clients who need your offers instead of creating them for/with you. While I work with clients closely to nail down their messaging and find words that make their products/services sound attractive and compelling, my clients first need to identify what it is that they want to do and sell.

2. A rough idea of your ideal client

You have an idea of who you’re trying to serve.

If you’re speaking to everyone, you’re speaking to no one.

I’m sure you’ve heard this saying like a million times before but only because it’s true.

As a copywriter, it is my job to ask you strategic questions about your dream brand and target market so that we can have your ideal client profile nailed down and communicate with them efficiently AND effectively. However, if you have absolutely no clue about who you want to serve, it may potentially hinder the copywriting process and the final product. This isn’t what you want, is it?

Ideal Client and brand discovery is an important part of my process but having at least a general frame of reference from the get-go can ensure we’re interviewing and studying the right target group.

3. You’re willing to go deep into your story, background, and past experiences

It doesn’t mean you need to share your deepest secrets with me, but I truly believe that we need to connect on a personal level to bring your brand story to life. As a copywriter, I’m not creating a brand new identity for my clients. Rather, I help them uncover their uniqueness and use that to craft a message that connects and converts.

4. You have a strong why

Meaning, you’re not just here to make money. You have the heart to serve people and feel like you would be doing a disservice by not doing what you do. By marrying your passion and your expertise, your copy and brand story will turn out 10x stronger. You have to be in love and excited about what you are selling, or people will be able to tell that it truly isn’t your passion. My first Strategy Session with clients is all about digging deeper into why they do what they do, why they love it, why they want to serve the people they do, and how this all came to be. It’s hard to generate the energy and authenticity that allows you to build an iconic brand without that.

How do you know if you need a copywriter?

1. You’re currently doing a rebrand or planning to do one soon

Having strong copy to match your killer branding is like the one-two punch to knock it out the park on your next launch. I’m SURE all website designers will agree with me on this, copy is the #1 roadblock when it comes to design. I always have clients come to me in a frantic mode when they realize they need copy done like yesterday. Totally been there in other aspects of my business, and I know it is no fun. It is always best to work with a copywriter before a full website design starts because when your designer has all the copy ready to go, the whole process will be way more streamlined. You’ll be wondering why the heck you didn’t do it sooner 😉.  If you have a rebrand in the near future and are ready to take your business to the next level, it’s time to put your dream team together.

2. You don’t feel confident in your brand messaging and are constantly wondering what to say

You’ve spent all this time creating a killer product in your zone of genius, but it won’t do anyone any good if they don’t feel compelled to learn more and take action. Not knowing what to say is scary because you need words to sell. If this is happening, chances are you don’t have a clear understanding of who your ideal client is and what makes your brand unique. I help my clients dig deep into their target market and truly understand their pains, questions, and desires.

When you have a clear and compelling message paired with an irresistible offer, selling becomes effortless. Doesn’t that sound delightful?!
